Ridiculously Long Ads in Cinema
Posted on June 10, 2007 - Filed Under experience
Nowadays, cinema advertisements are going to the extreme. Either they are excruciatingly long or plainfully lame. Of course there’s the occasionally good ads but other than that, i would rather walk in late, just in time for my movie.
Last Tuesday, i was in GSC - Queensbay to catch the Last Mimzy and was forced to go through 20 minutes of ads before i was able to watch the movie. I understand that there has to be advertisements before the movie which is another way of getting revenue but maybe the cinema operator should limit it to 10minutes max. Or better still, play the ads before the stated time in the ticket (which is highly unlikely).
I went through a similar scenario for the next 2 days. On Wednesday, i was back to catch Shrek the Third and watched 25 minutes of advertisements. By the time the movie even started, i have finished my drink -_-”
It was of no difference on Thursday when i was waiting for Oceans 13 to begin. Twenty minutes of ads.
So basically i watched an hour of advertisement this week alone …
Besides that, some advertisements are terrible. One good example is the Fresh Applemint Taste Toothpaste ad.

The advertisement shows this girl who has just brushed her teeth with the above toothpaste. She goes to the living room where 2 guys were playing on their Playstation and she blows her breath to their faces. Who in their right mind does that ? Wait and it doesn’t stop there. After the guys smelt her Applemint breath, they rushed off to get the toothpaste -_-”
Between the long torturous advertisement session, they showed an ad on our 50th Independence Day and a couple of rows in front of me, there was about seven international students, mainly Westerners. So i told Lingster to see what their reaction would be while watching the advertisement on our coming independence day. Surprisingly, they sat still and never made fun of it. On the contrary, the people right behind us were laughing their heads off.
Now i know i don’t have to rush into the cinema the next time

Hey, I agree with you. It’s like 30 minutes long and I’m not really happy about it unless I arrive late.
That’s the film industry man… at least there aren’t ads in the middle of the movie! That would be terrible.
Every transition for a show during the ads I thought a show was going to start. Start from movie previews, then ads, then those reminders (which is also ads)…
Then at last the ‘U’ or ‘18′ info come out….
I tend to enter the cinemas 15 mins after the stated showtime. Most of the time, I only need to go through 2-3 more ads before the film begins.
Yeah the ads are pretty redundant. Maybe they shud split the ads into two halves, one at the begining and the other at the end. The cheaper ones at the end. Lol.
There were LOADS of ads during Shrek.25 mins is really too long.At times, I love ads though.:P Some are pretty interesting.Plus, prevents me from missing any part of the movie cause movies are usually an impulsive thing for me so I end up late.Hehe
hcfoo: yeah i will be going in late the next time. 30 mins is ridiculous
narrowband: hahaha in the middle of the movie means can die man. imagine if it’s the climax and they show an Ad out of the sudden …
yee piao: i think everyone would also assume the same thing. but after a few times in gsc, i realized once you see that digi ad in the cinema, your movie is about to start right after the ad on gsc.
Swifty: i always wanted to catch the latest trailers on upcoming movies but then i rather download them then to go thru what i did. yeah i rather go thru 2-3 ads
voch: walau, at the end also got Ad ar? who gonna see? hehehe
charng: yeah charng. that time when we watched shrek, the ads were annoying. some were interesting but only a handful. if there were better concept ads then i dun mind going thru 10 mins of Ads
20 minutes really long advertisement. Anyway, why you were so free and can watch movie continuously 3 days?
jenny: i am having my holidays now, so i took advantage of the student price
YAAAA, so long that by the time they start the movie, i feel like walking through the exit already.
But no matter how long the ads are, patrons will still flow in, so i think the management will continue adding more ads.
It’s not much different in the UK. I went to watch Oceans 13 last week, and even though I arrived a quarter of an hour late, I still had to wait another quarter of an hour before the movie started. (Half an hour!)
On the bright side, the ads here are bearable, and some are even quite good
Btw, if you have the time, I wrote a post on watching movies in Miri’s cinema a while back: http://sheenapunya.blogspot.com/2006/07/i-received-e-mail-from-friend-today.html
Kinda makes you appreciate GSC
lingster: hahaha, next time we walk in late. then we don’t have to go thru some ads.
Sheena: i enjoyed reading your entry, especially the part about how nightline interrupted pirates of the caribbean.
UK is that bad ? i guess all cinema operators are doing the same. Best thing to do is, walk in late
